We are planning a vacation in October starting in Birmingham AL and driving to New Orleans. Bit confused on parking in New Orleans. understand you can walk to certain areas and take the streetcars, but is there parking or a public parking lot in and around the downtown area ? If yes, what generally is the cost for parking say all day if we are "touristing" around say by streetcar. Kind of asking for two reasons.

1) Thinking may need a car to get initially from one side of town to the other, and

2) May due to price of the hotels stay outside of the downtown area.

Please help.
